Aivlosin® – Your First Choice for SRD and Ileitis Control

By Alexander Hintz, DVM

Tylvalosin is a newer -generation macrolide antibiotic present in both Aivlosin® 62.5% Water Soluble Granules (WSG) and Aivlosin 17% Type A Medicated Article.

Both products are labeled for the control of ileitis (Lawsonia intracellularis) and additionally, Aivlosin WSG is labeled for the control of Swine Respiratory Disease.

The warm, humid weather of the summer months brings a primary herd-health risk to the forefront for swine veterinarians and producers: ileitis. The familiar somewhat darker, loose stools in grow-finish hogs is an unwanted reminder to veterinarians that ileitis infection could be present. When signs of disease emerge, Aivlosin® WSG is an excellent choice for ileitis control in swine herds. Following administration, Tylvalosin is rapidly absorbed reaching peak blood levels in approximately two hours. Tylvalosin is  metabolized to  – 3 acetyltylosin (3-AT) – which also has antimicrobial activity. These attributes make Aivlosin® extremely efficacious in the control of ileitis in swine herds.

As well as providing excellent control of ileitis Aivlosin® WSG is also labelled for the control of swine respiratory disease (SRD) associated with major bacterial pathogens such as Pasteurella multocida, Bordetella bronchiseptica, Streptococcus suis, and Haemophilus parasuis.

Disease is non-discriminatory in swine herds, and producers may struggle with both respiratory disease and ileitis simultaneously at various stages of production. Aivlosin® is a judicious choice with its low therapeutic dose, its short treatment duration and with broad-spectrum activity against both specific respiratory and enteric pathogen.

The rapid absorption and excretion of tylavlosin gives the product an industry-leading zero-day slaughter withdrawal.  Additionally, Aivlosin®, is very safe –no drug related adverse reactions were observed during target animal safety or clinical trials and there are no known adverse interactions between the use of Aivlosin® WSG and ionophores used in the feed (such as Skycis®).

With its broad-spectrum label, rapid absorption, and its zero-day slaughter withdrawal time, Aivlosin® WSG provides the veterinarian with an efficacious product and is a judicious antimicrobial choice for their clients’ swine herds.
